Kiwi fails to break US60c level
January 07 – Close: The New Zealand dollar reached its highest level against the greenback in nearly three weeks but failed to push through the US60c level.
GPG's 'unsatisfactory year'
Investment company Guinness Peat Group is warning that it has had a "very unsatisfactory" year and says a number of write-downs in value of investments have been necessary.
Commodity prices continue slump
Commodity prices have plunged again for a fifth consecutive month, down 7.4 percent for December, according to the ANZ Commodity Price Index.
Dramatic fall in employment confidence
Employment confidence collapsed in the final quarter of 2008, according to the Westpac McDermott Miller employment confidence index, which fell to its lowest level since the survey began in 2004.
